A recent blog post by Anil Dash claimed that cyberbullying did not exist.  After highly publicized suicides like Tyler Clementi at Rutgers University and 13 year old Megan Meier which were both due to harrassment and bullying online, can such a statement be true?  What do you think?  Anil claims bullying is bullying, whether you use a pen to write a note to call someone bad names or the phone for prank calling or the computer to send harmful messages, it is still just bullying.  The computer and technology allow the bullies to be lazier.  If there were no technology, would the bully still do the same things? Explain if you technology IS or IS NOT to blame for the way people are bullied these days. (You must use 5 COMPLETE SENTENCES or you will get ZERO CREDIT)

No it can’t be true. Yes the bully would still do the same things if there were no technology. No i don’t think technology can be blamed for how people are bullied today. Because Its the way people use technology that can be blamed for all the bullying that is going on. Because people don’t use technology the way they should use the technology we have today.

i think bullying is a bad thing to do. and if we dident have technology, then it would be alot less bullying, but there will still be some. its not the technology that bullys people, it is the people on the other side of the phone, so you cant blame the technology. and when people are being bullied by someone, then the bullier is down about something, or doesent like something about his or her self.

Yes they will do the same because it happens at schools and stuff too. Even know that the computer is the most dangerous on bullying then its the same at schools too. So that’s what i think about the bullying thing. So thanks for asking this question Mr. Steed.

Yes. Because if people can say whatever they want on the internet. If people don’t see them daily they would have to send a message or call to bully.

Yes and No for some reason i cant choose. Its mostly used to talk to your friends or to play games. Or ,like some people, it is used for bullying. Some people bully other people boys and girls through text or phone call. They mostly go through text so they become anonymous and make you even more attempted to do suicide.

There is different way’s of cyberbulling, like facebook, myspace, and even twitter, texting is a part of this too, and there is even a thing call sexting, but sexting is not a part of this. I don’t understand why people do this but it is very disrespectful. So no, it cant be true.

i think that bullying is wrong…. but i don’t think that technology to blame for this. kids can get off the computer or what ever. they don’t have to stay on the computer and take all that. if that happens and u start getting bad get off the computer for a while.

People that bully have no friends and no power they just do it cause there biger than the other person.phone computers and other technology has nothing to do with bulling people just use it to get in touch with the other person.Yes bullies would be doing the same thing just in person.

I dont think the bully would do the same thing. They wouldnt do the same thing because some bully are scared to say some of the stuff to the persons face. some bullies are bullies on and off line. when someone bullies it really hurts the other persons feelings.

I think that bullying is still really bad. No matter if it’s on the computer, on the phone, or in person, it is the same thing; really bad. If we didn’t have these types of technology for people to use as a type of “cover up” or disguise, then there would indeed be less bullying. But, that isn’t all to blame for bullying. Alot of people bully to make themselves feel better about themselves or because they have been bullied before.

SHE IS RIGHT ABOUT ONE THING BULLYING IS BULLYING. BUT CYBER BULLYING IS JUST SAYING IT BULLYING ON THE COMPUTER. AND IT DOES EXIST. WHEN I THINK OF CYBER BULLYING I THINK OF PEOPLE KNOWN AS BULLIES HARNESSING SOMEONE ONLINE THAN TO THEIR FACE. MAYBE IF THERE WAS NOT TECHNOLOGY THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN BECUASE THAT PERON WILL NOT DO THAT TO THE VICTIMS FACE.

it is. technology is not to blame it is the people that use technology for that purpose. i think that you people that do bullying are just pathetic. i dont get it why people do these very disrespectful to others. cyber bullies are just scared to do it in front of people but regular bullies just want attention. some times when people are being bullied by someone then the bullier is down about something that is happening.

I think that maybe it is a lot of it but that’s not really the reason. Bullies are bullies so if they are bullying it can be physical. And physical bullying can be a major problem. Also if technology is to blame then its because of people not ignoring people, Because people should just be smart enough to not look at stuff because its all of your choice to open up an email or a text. So i think it might be but not really.

IT is a cruel way for other kids to feel better about themselfs. yes i do think that technological is the blame for most of bulling. it is a way for other kids to let out there anger on other people. but they don’t know how much damage to the other kid until it’s to late. but then they don’t even care they think it’s just a joke. but this is real and some kids try to kill themselfs over it. affecting more life’s than just one. the families are also affected by this because they loose a loved one over this. so yes most certainly technology is to blame for bulling and it should be stoped before it affects some one else and there loved ones. i mean would you want one of your loved ones to have to go though this? and the ones that are doing the bulling don’t even think about what would they do if this was there family member that was getting bulled. they would care so why don’t they care now? 🙂

Well to be honest I think its partially the reason but if we didn’t have technology bullies would be bullies to the victims face and it can get ugly. So even though bullying happens over technology its better that way instead of face to face cause the bully can then beat the victim up really badly!

i think that has a little to do with emotional stress and people are very sensitive about what people think about them. and that’s why it leads to suicidal thoughts. but 96% of suicidal murders is because of physical & emotional thoughts. But i think its mostly because people make fun of others and don’t mean for them to take it that far. i don’t think cell phones and computers are a cause of it.

For one, I do believe there is a such thing as cyber bulling. It’s bullying regardless but there are different types of bullying. I feel the statement is not true. Technology may not be the blame for bullying but it does make it easier. Some people are too scared to bully someone to their face so they do it through things like computers and texting.
