Recent studies have shown that kids are posting too much sensitive information online.  Many parents believe that kids are not thinking about what they say before they post it online.  Also, the pictures are too revealing and too much swearing is being shared.  Many parents are completely unaware of what kids have on their pages or what type of posts their kids make on a daily basis.

A)  If you REFLECT on social networking, Why do you think kids share so much information with complete strangers online?

B)   Social networking such as party lines and chat rooms have been around for 20 years, so how have advances in technology changed and made sites like Facebook and Myspace more interesting now?”

C)  Do you believe there is a line that shouldn’t be crossed when it comes to pictures and things said online on sites like Facebook or Myspace?   What is that line?

D)  Even though kids have been told about the number of cyber predators online, why do you think kids still put so much personal information online for everyone to see?

Myspace has tried to come back with a vengeance.  In the last week of October 2010, Myspace relaunched with the Myspace 3.0 Experience.  Where it used to be a “place for friends”, it is now a “social entertainment destination”.  This version is more streamlined, easier to read and navigate and not crazy with page design.

A)  By watching the videos below, can you analyze what is good and what is bad with the new Myspace design?

B)  How can this redesign turn into people actually coming back to myspace and making it the number 1 social networking site again?  Or can it?

C)  How does this new look of Myspace compare/contrast to Facebook?  Explain ALL of  your answers.

GE (together with BBDO, SocialVibe and SpeedShape) have launched a new digital campaign to get you thinking about the environment with a photo project called “Tag Your Green”. GE hopes the project will inspire people to share new “green” ideas and connect with others by watching, commenting and uploading photos and videos on Flickr and YouTube.  GE, together with Howcast, started the Ecomagination YouTube Video Challenge, for which 15 popular YouTubers (like iJustine, 2nd video below) were invited to collaborate with their fans and come up with videos that brings the notion of “green” into different locations, contexts and situations.

A)Is this a smart use of GE’s resources?

B)How does getting the public involved help this cause?

C)Are there parts of this project that you could discuss with your family and friends to help the environment in your local community?  Explain your answers.

The local FOX station in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas recorded a segment satirizing social media called “The Fox 4 DFW Roast of Social Media” and it’s pretty funny.  FaceBook, Foursquare,  Skype and Twitter are all spoofed and the YouTube video is below.  The anchor opens up with breaking news about a gunman on the loose in City Hall, but every correspondent on the scene is so involved in social media technology that he or she has lost touch with what’s actually happening. Is this a sign of times to come with how out of hand people have gotten with social media?  Is this video really making fun of social media or telling a little bit of the truth and we are heading towards “idiocracy”?  Explain why this spoof of social media works or doesn’t work?  Are they taking things too far or getting them just right?  Explain your answers.
